Arts Council Malta will represent Malta at the 2025 London Design Biennale with ‘URNA,’ an innovative project redefining cremation.

‘URNA’ introduces a new ritual for handling human remains, anticipating the adoption of cremation in Malta. It reimagines spaces like the columbarium and ossuary, offering a poetic, intellectually stimulating, and environmentally conscious approach to interment while challenging traditional norms.

The project features geometric, spherical modules that house cremated remains, symbolising a connection to the cosmos and inviting cultural reinterpretations. It is the work of a multinational team, including Andrew Borg Wirth, Anthony Bonnici, and Tamil Raif.

‘URNA’ will be displayed in Somerset House, responding to the Biennale’s 2025 theme, “Surface Reflections,” curated by artistic director Samuel Ross.

The Biennale runs from the 5th to the 29th of June 2025.
